Finding Article Ideas

By: Ben Watson

Start by listing the questions that you seem to be asked every day. You should be able to come up with a handful at least. Sometimes in technical fields you can come up with hundreds. Each one of those questions is a budding article. Keep a list of questions and add to it when a new one comes up. Or perhaps you can write a summary of frequently asked questions.

What are some of the new products you are selling this year? Are they based on some new technology or trends in the industry? Are they offered in new colors or with new options? Are they new and improved? Write about that technology or those trends. Write about the old versus the new. How might each fit with different types of people.

Do your customers have varied demographics? Write articles tailored to these demographics. Take articles that you have written beforehandand rewrite them with a different point of view. In addition to your original article, write articles that are geared to women or parents, kids or the elderly.

Write articles about important product attributes. If you sell tennis racquets write about important attributes of a racquet. Remember here that you are not selling a particular racquet in your article; you are educating your customer how to choose the right product for them. You are an expert on your products by virtue of knowing more about your products than many of your customers. Use that knowledge and write articles that explain tips and tricks to less knowledgeable users.

What do your customers do with your products? Do you sell hiking shoes; write about places to go hiking. Write about other hiking gear or clothing even if you don’t sell it. Write about hiking safety. By writing articles on these related topics, you are establishing yourself as an expert in your field. Your customers will have more confidence in purchasing from you and will better trust your purchasing advice.

One of the easiest ways to come up with articles is to take frequent subjects in your industry and make lists. Five type of wear to look for. The three telltales signs of overwatering your lawn. The other great thing about lists is that they lend themselves well to creating unique articles. Simply write a ’Five low carb desserts’ article, and then vary your articles by replacing some or all of the recipes in your submissions. Dos and Don’ts articles are another type of article that is easy to write and lends itself to being rewritten in many variations.

Remember when writing articles that you shouldn’t be writing advertisements for your product or services. Costumers can see a sales pitch a mile away. Don’t try to sell them with your articles. The best articles are those that are intended to inform your customer. A better informed customer is closer to making a purchasing decision. Now when he or she comes to your store, office or website, many times he or she has already made or is very close to making a purchasing decision. As a result you won’t have to work as hard to close the sale.
