Getting to Know the Skipper Dolls

By: Ben Needles

At the time of Skipper Dolls launch as a public toy to the public, these dolls are meant to be little girls that are estimated to be ten years old. After many years however, she was then introduced as a teenager. Like the Tammy Dolls, it was during the 1960s that more parents prefer Skipper Dolls to Barbie dolls also because of their more children-friendly body curves, unlike the former who have more adult-body curves.

Skipper Dolls were introduced five years after Barbie Dolls were launched in the year 1964. She was being produced continuously until 2003, when these types of dolls retired and general production was put to a halt. Skippers body was also restructured many times that produced many types of body curves or styles throughout the years. Many regard the early types of Skipper Dolls, as the ones that are truly iconic, because the later production of these types of dolls in the other production years that came didnt match the original quality and style of the early versions.

Skipper Dolls are about nine inches and twenty-five centimeters tall when it was first launched. Later years of production created teenage Skipper Dolls that are much taller than the original. In the year 1975, Growing Up Skipper was also introduced, and so is the introduction of two heights. Skippers arms rotated, grew further in height and controversially, had much smaller breasts.

Like the Tammy Dolls, Skipper Dolls were also made out of hard vinyl for the body and soft vinyl for the head. However, when Skipper Dolls celebrated its thirtieth anniversary, they were produced out of porcelain. It was the company of Mattel, Inc. that managed the production of Skipper Dolls all throughout these years.

Skipper Dolls were considered a great hit to the general public when it was originally produced and released. As many are considering this doll as the alternative to Barbie, many are instantly hooked. Modern doll collectors call Skipper Dolls as Straight Leg Skipper, and the features of this particular doll include a long hair that can be blonde, redhead or brunette. The hair can also have some form of bangs. The later versions of the Skipper have bendable or flexible legs like the Twist and Turn Skipper and the Malibu Skipper.

Like many other types of dolls, Skipper became so popular that she also has her own set of family and friends. During the 1960s, Skippers friends were Skooter, Ricky and Living Fluff. As a little sister to Barbie, she also shared family members with her, together with their cousin Francine. It was during the decade that followed that another friend of Skipper was introduced by the name of Ginger.

Most Skipper Dolls nowadays can be bought on several auctions sites like Ebay. The vintage items are definitely more expensive because of their sentimental value but rest assured that they wont generally exceed three hundred dollars. A particular purchase will already include a set of Skipper dolls with some accessories and clothes to match. But there are also some items that can be bought for a little fewer than 100 dollars, and this includes Growing Skipper Dolls.
